The Industrial Revolution was directly caused by the creation of mechanical inventions. Once these inventions were created, it changed the way people worked (and the way they lived). With the help of these mechanical tools, one person was now able to do the work of many people. Clothing was now much easier to make. Before machines, each person made their own clothes. But with the help of machines,1 person could now make clothing for many people, and get this…. They could also sell that clothing. A new idea indeed!

Inventions are created to meet a need that people have. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone because he needed a way to better communicate with someone at a different location. The first car was invented as a better means of transportation. And the George Foreman Cooker was created as an alternative way to grill your food.

The creation of "American Big Business"

Have you ever heard of the seasoning brand called "McCormick"? Cyrus McCormick was also important in bringing the Industrial Revolution to America. He developed the Mechanical Reaper used in farming. Because McCormick's reaper could do the work of about 5 men, agriculture totally changed. With the mechanical reaper, more grain could be harvested (cut and placed into piles).

The "Father of factories"
Samuel Slater has been called the "Father of the American Factory System" because he led the way to develop manufacturing in the U.S.A. Slater was born in England, worked in the early factories there. He gain knowledge of how the factories operated and realized that he could become wealthy by developing factories in the United States of America. Even though there were laws against share technological knowledge about factories, Slater left England to go to America and build his factories. And he was indeed very successful.

An option that reads, “reduce file size” should appear.
- Rename your file to have the Number 2 at the end
- click SAVE and your file size has been reduced.

- Click on the “Lewis and Clark Expedition” link
- Now find the “Our Completed Assignments” link
- On this page (Our Completed Assignments) Find the link in the middle named “more tools”
